GravitHy selects Hatch to deliver FEED for its low‑carbon iron plant in Fos‑sur‑Mer

A major advance toward Europe’s first large‑scale low‑carbon merchant iron plant

The Fos‑sur‑Mer facility is designed to produce 2 million tonnes per year of HBI ( Hot Briquetted Iron), using 100% low‑carbon hydrogen as the reducing agent.
This low‑carbon feedstock will support European steelmakers in their transition to electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking and in dramatically reducing CO₂ emissions.

With this project, GravitHy is pioneering a new industrial model in Europe — one that combines technological excellence, carbon‑neutral processes, and strategic resilience.

Hatch’s role: defining the full technical architecture

As part of the FEED scope, Hatch will be responsible for:

• defining the plant’s complete technical configuration;
• process integration and energy system design;
• detailed process and energy balances;
• constructability, logistics, and site‑integration studies;
• cost estimates, execution strategy, and project schedule;
• preparation of tender packages for the next project phases.

The facility is conceived as a first‑of‑its‑kind industrial system, integrating large‑scale hydrogen production with hydrogen‑based direct reduction of iron.
A key technical objective of the FEED is to balance hydrogen generation, iron reduction operations, and power system reliability, while ensuring the operational flexibility needed for long‑term performance.

Project execution is planned to begin in 2028, subject to a final investment decision.
